Bowness Animal Hospital has been caring for dogs and cats in NW Calgary since January 2018. What started as a commitment to giving the Bowness community a trusted, local veterinary option has grown into a full-service animal hospital with a team that genuinely loves what it does. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:00 am to 7:00 pm, and Saturday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. New clients are always welcome.
Bowness Animal Hospital opened in January 2018 with a simple goal: to provide the kind of veterinary care that puts the pet and the family first. We recognized that NW Calgary needed a clinic where clients could feel heard, where wait times were reasonable, and where the focus was on building lasting relationships rather than rushing through appointments.
Since opening, we have grown steadily alongside the Bowness community, expanding our services and capabilities while holding on to what made us worth recommending in the first place: honest communication, transparent pricing, and genuine care for every animal that walks through our door. Our team includes veterinarians and support staff who take the time to get to know your pet as an individual, not just as a case file.
Dr. Satnam Dhothar is the lead veterinarian at Bowness Animal Hospital and the driving force behind its reputation for compassionate, patient-centred care. Dr. Dhothar earned his Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (BVSc & AH) from the College of Veterinary Sciences at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana, India, graduating in 1991. He brings over three decades of veterinary experience to every appointment.
Dr. Dhothar has a strong background in small animal internal medicine, general surgery, and preventive care. He also holds accreditation with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), allowing him to issue International Health Certificates for pets traveling abroad, a service he provides directly at our clinic. This combination of clinical breadth and regulatory accreditation means our clients can access a wide range of services in one location.
What sets Dr. Dhothar apart is the way he communicates. He is known for being direct and honest with pet owners, explaining options clearly and never recommending more than is genuinely needed. He takes the time to make anxious animals feel safe, adapting each visit to the individual pet. Whether your dog has never been comfortable at the vet or your cat needs a procedure they have been avoiding, Dr. Dhothar and the team approach every visit without judgment and with patience.

Heartworm is less prevalent in Alberta than in warmer regions, but it remains a risk for pets that travel or spend time in areas with high mosquito activity. We recommend testing and preventive products for all at-risk dogs and cats.
We use positive, low-stress handling techniques and are happy to adapt visits to reduce anxiety. This may include allowing your pet to remain in the reception area, taking extra time between steps, or offering visits outside when appropriate. Please mention any anxiety concerns when booking and we will plan accordingly.
